Way to go, Britons!

When you're occupying a country, things turn sour and try to find a way out, what would you do?

Well, one course of action is to try to get a friendly goverment in place running things, as the coalition has been trying to do in Iraq.

All fine and dandy, but the place doesn't quiet down quite as you would hope. Then a couple of your soldiers gets arrested. What do you do then?

You break into the prison with a tank, release your two soldiers (along with 150 other inmates).

*BEEP*, Wrong answer.

The joys of parenthood

I'm really sucker for my kids grabbing my neck and saying "I love you, dad!".

Do they do it on purpose?

Soprano decided to spam me again!

This is my favorite peewee: why on earth companies insist on spamming people? It just creates bad karma.

A few weeks ago Soprano spammed me, and I duly reported the incident at sfnet.viestinta.roskapostit.
I sent them a response telling them to stop spamming any of my domains.
I also called Academica, where a guy that called himself "Suhonen"
told me that he'll do something about it.

I also asked him what their anti-spam policy was. He couldn't tell
and told that mr Broadstreet" would be able to discuss the matter
with me, unfortunately he wasn't in at the moment. I left him a message
asking him to contact me.

That call never came.

Now Soprano spammed me again. I'll have to call Academica again. Stay tuned!

T-shirt shop open!

I gave a lecture for tax inspectors
regarding internet, including various internet shops and what have you.
I came across an interesting web site: it printed T-shirts that others
have designed, and the designers got money for each sale. The site was Cafepress.

Then a few weeks later I got totally mad at various delivery lorry
drives, who, instead of parking near the curb where there is lots of
space available, decide to park in the driveway, two meters to the left
of the curb!

Well, I decided I need a t-shirt for that. I found out that there is a European supplier operating in a similar way, called Spreadshirt. I decided to open a shop there with my collegue, Jokke.

Now you can see the t-shirt stemming from the frustration of those who cannot walk. The rest of the designs you can find at NerdsRUs shop.

Nerds have taken over at Elisa!

Edit: Further study and thinking showed, that the pages are not Elisa's. They belong to their customer. Funny anyway.

Over at Elisa (one of Finlands biggest telcos) they've decided to
really hit the search engines. If you look at
http://elisanet.fi/polyfoniset.soittoaanet/ you'll find for example
these strings (translations in italics):

Ease of installing linux

I was installing linux for a friend this evening.

Those who suggest that end-users install the bloody thing are out of their minds!

If Joe Average can get M$ Windows installed badly, I cannot imagine what they can do with linux!

Welcome to this edition of LWK over at www.kapsi.fi

EDIT: This is no longer tru. Instead of being a hard-core dude, I decided to do it the easy way. Perhaps I spend more time blogging, now that it is easy. This is now in Blogger.

Decided to run my own blog for a change, so I got an account at kapsi and set up the blog there. The url'll change when I direct my domains here, but the contents will remain.

I decided to run BLOG:CMS, since it seemed easy to set up, kapsi servers were up to the requirements that the sw had, and BLOG:CMS seemed to have the features I wanted.

I can warmly recommend KAPSI if you have personal web sites to run,
or otherwise need shell access. Their administration has been
excellent: friendly and knowledgeable. Granted, it is volunteer run,
but responsetimes have been good (a day or two, compared to weeks with
the inflexible ISPs we have here).

For 30 eur membership fee/year you can get www space, shell access and loads of other stuff. Only for Finns, though.

The horror of falling asleep

really wonder, what's the horror of going to bed for kids?

Today we visited my in-laws nearby. As usual, we got home a bit too late in the evening, and the bedtime for the kids was approaching fast.

As usual, my sister-in-law dumped a huge load of toys for the kids from their attic, and I decided to leave them in the car, so we had some chance to get the elder boy in bed before midnight.

As could be expected, he decided to get hysteric when he noticed that all the toys were left behind. Since he was obviously tired, I started to put him into the bed.

"I'm not tired! I'm not tired!" were about the only recognizable words amids the screaming. And he was sound asleep within 10 minutes ;-)

I wonder what it is that is so horrifying in falling asleep?

A nice customer service experience for a change

I just wanted to tell about a wonderful customer service.

I ordered a case for my phone from expansys.com. It arrived as promised (apart from the fckup on the part of the courier, didn't find the bloody address at first).

The case was nice, and light. I used it every day.

Last weekend I noticed that it is coming apart. It was splitting. I had used it just for 2.5 months. Blah!

I sent an e-mail to expansys people asking them what to do.

They're sending a new one, no hassle!

Hmm. I'll probably buy stuff from then in the future.

Accident

Very sad news. 23 youngsters died in a traffic accident last night. A bus ran into a lorry carrying paper rolls (not your usual toilet rolls, but rolls that weight 700kg (1400 pounds).

The youngest one was 12 yrs old.

I wonder why they didn't transport that paper using railroads? They have
perfectly good, modern railroad running from where the lorry started to the place it was heading to.

Anyway, read the article here

About teasing bums (and your readers)

Ran into this article about harassing bums.

I got SO angry when reading the article. What an insensitive guy the writer is. Fortunately I managed to read to the end of the article before writing a response (after reading the whole thing I didn't feel any need to).

After that it was pretty funny reading the comments the readers made. Many (most?) of them didn't read the article thru.

This reminds me of the old times when I ran a bbs using a 1200bps modem: people don't read more than first half of the screen they're presented with. It really doesn't matter what you write after that

Re: New Spanish Leader Vows to Pull Iraq Troops

Spotted in NPR: Morning Edition

Seems to me that the Spaniards are doing one mistake after another:

  1. They become very active member of George W. Bush's coalition in Iraq
  2. Mr Aznar claims (apparently due to the election pressures) that ETA did it, too soon, too forcefully to be believable.
  3. Now they're caving in to the terrorists and leaving Iraq

I don't think that invading another country is a good thing. Even worse is to invade the country and then leave because of the terrorists. This shows that their tactics is working

My condolences to the victims of the Madrid attacks, and their families.

Not a baby anymore

Our firstborn isn’t a baby any more. He had his 3 years teeth checkup the other day.

His teeth are in excellent condition, but the dentist said that the pacifier has to go, unless we want our kid to have front teeth that stick out.
Kalle agreed to trade the pacifiers for a toy lorry quite peacefully. The only problems came when he went to have a nap: "I cannot go on without the pacifiers!". Well, after a few reminders where the pacifiers had gone and why he settled down. Even the evening wasn’t any problem.

So, he isn’t a baby any more
