Removing a selectable option in a selection box/warning causes people not selecting the removed option? DUH!

Great news: Google has been able to make users of Chrome to heed the warning about security certificates.

Earlier about 70% of the users went ahead and proceeded to the website anyway, now only about 40% do the same.

Great results, eh?

Well, if you look a bit closer, they removed the "Proceed to the website" button. I guess they hid it behind "Advanced" options.

It is actually surprising that the 40% of the users were able to proceed to the website! The 30% who didn't find it must be frustrated ;)

Here's to the article in "Help Net Securit": Browser security warning redesigned with partial success

Shoot the messenger!

Well, if not shoot, at least put him in jail.

That happened to a computer scientist in India, who exposed that the security of the India's voting machines are not as good as they should be.

Cool, instead of actually fixing the problem, put the troublemaker in jail!

Getting cheaper lights (i.e. LEDs, for example) won't save that much electricity, after all

The scientist say that we just use more light, instead of getting the benefits in our electricity bills.

Well, this is hardly a surprise. I remember this phenomenon already from 30 years ago, when networks were only dreams, and the hosts were connected to by using modems, over normal phone lines.

At that time the throughput of the modems was increasing rapidly. I heard some say that we'll save a lot on the telephone costs because of this.

Didn't happen: we just ended up sending more e-mail, downloading more files etc.

Hydrogen car problems? Chickens to the resque

Remember the bruhaha about the bird feathers last winter? The birdies weren't dead when they were relieved from the feathers to get pillows etc. (that must be extremely painful, kinda like brazilian wax on steroids agains your wishes).

Well, I hope this H2 storage idea is about chicken feathers taken from dead chicken!

An ejaculation a day will keep the sperm virile

Great news for you guys: ejaculation a day will keep your little wigglers healthy and fast, says research published in the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Amsterdam (the story, in Finnish, here).

This was actually reported a bit earlier (like 5 years) for example here

So, no need to keep at distance if you're trying to make babies ;-)

Life with a woman

Well, most of the time living with a woman is wonderful (if she is your chosen partner, that is), but sometimes it is somewhat frustrating. This strip captures the frustration perfectly

Yet another scam, this time from China

I got this fabulous offer: just answer to a few questions, and I'd be given lots of stuff.

Hmm.

This was marketed by spam. No indication who is behind this marvellous offer is to be found in the www-site, and the domain was registered just a few days ago.

I have to admit, the spammer's Finnish is pretty good. You can check it at here until it's gone

I'm gonna be so rich by answering all those questions!

Nerds have taken over at Elisa!

Edit: Further study and thinking showed, that the pages are not Elisa's. They belong to their customer. Funny anyway.

Over at Elisa (one of Finlands biggest telcos) they've decided to
really hit the search engines. If you look at
http://elisanet.fi/polyfoniset.soittoaanet/ you'll find for example
these strings (translations in italics):

About teasing bums (and your readers)

Ran into this article about harassing bums.

I got SO angry when reading the article. What an insensitive guy the writer is. Fortunately I managed to read to the end of the article before writing a response (after reading the whole thing I didn't feel any need to).

After that it was pretty funny reading the comments the readers made. Many (most?) of them didn't read the article thru.

This reminds me of the old times when I ran a bbs using a 1200bps modem: people don't read more than first half of the screen they're presented with. It really doesn't matter what you write after that

Interesting reasons for accidents

Keynoter.com reports: “Scuba tanks can
explode for various reasons, but the most common cause is from being
out of hydrostatic test date, or out of visual inspection date. Both
tests check for cracking in the neck of the tank and ensure its
structural integrity.” Details here: http://www.keynoter.com/articles/2004/08/06/news/news17.txt

Interesting. Missing a test is a reason for explotion? I thought that you’d need some structural damage as well.

A
bit more subtle mistake is the one often seen in Finnish newspapers:
“The car accident was caused by slippery road”. Slippery road my
trousers. I have yet to see an accident caused by slippery road. The
accident occurs because the driver didn’t take the current road
conditions into account.
